Communio Edmund Rice

What does Communio mean?
Communio is a Latin word meaning community. So Communio Edmund Rice literally means “The Community of Edmund Rice”.
What is Communio Edmund Rice all about?
Communio Edmund Rice is a place where you can experience friendship, support, and prayer. We feel that it is important to develop these qualities because without friendship and support it is very difficult to reach out to those in need. It is also very difficult to develop an adult faith and prayer life without sharing your experiences with people you feel comfortable with.

Communio Edmund Rice provides opportunities for young adults to come together in friendship to explore prayer, to develop a real connection with God and to work on social justice projects.

Communio groups take inspiration from the example of the prophet Micah who says that we should “act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with our God." (Micah 6:8)

What happens at meetings?

Our Communio Groups come together once a month to share their experiences of prayer with each other as friends. We work together on social justice projects and enjoy an atmosphere of openness and acceptance.

Why is Blessed Edmund Rice in the title?

We have chosen to include Blessed Edmund Rice in our name because we feel Blessed Edmund has a lot to teach us. His work with the marginalised in his own time and place is an inspiration that we try our best to follow in our daily lives.

Who is Blessed Edmund Rice?

Blessed Edmund Rice was a remarkable man who lived his life as the prophet Micah suggests we should. His life choices were truly just. He loved his family and community tenderly and developed a true relationship with God.

He was a very wealthy merchant who lived in Waterford in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. After the loss of his wife, who died in a tragic accident he chose to sell his business and took a very decisive step. He embarked on a spiritual journey that changed his life utterly.

Following the example of Nano Nagle Edmund decided to devote the remainder of his life, and all of his resources, to the education and care of poor boys in Waterford. He sold his business and arranged for his step-sister, Joan Murphy, and his daughter to move to Callan. Edmund’s decision to educate the poor was the beginning of a very interesting journey that led to the founding of the Christian and Presentation Brothers.
